Eclipse X22 Overview

The Eclipse X22 is designed to be the fastest folding bike in the world. With hand-built 26” wheels and race-tuned geometry, it’s a full-sized road bike, but it folds down small in 10 seconds. It boasts an Ultegra drivetrain, and—just in time for the UCI’s new regulations—a set of Shimano hydraulic disc brakes. With a stealth black finish, hydroformed fork, red Syntace accents, and perfected engineering, the X22 inaugurates a new chapter in Tern design.

  • Kinetix Pro X 26” wheels with straight-pull Sapim spokes for a blazingly fast ride
  • Shimano Ultegra / 105 drivetrain for 22 speeds and Grand Tour gear inches
  • Shimano hydraulic disc brakes for extreme stopping power
  • Adjustable VRO handlebar stem to fine-tune your ride position
  • High-performance Kojak road tires with puncture protection
  • SR-71 matte finish
  • Fold and store indoors for the best theft protection

My Favorite Bike Ever

I chose the Eclipse because I wanted a folder to travel with, but didn't want slow speeds and janky geometry. 26" wheels are a perfect compromise between folding size and fast performance. I owned a Dahon Vector, but the smaller wheels made long hauls feel longer and to be honest, I felt uncool.

I have a CHANGE folding bike with 26 inch wheels, but while it does everything I need in terms of performance, it doesn't fold as easily and has a fussy folding mechanic that is adequate and only a few seconds longer, but never quite clicked.

So I bought an Eclipse. I LOVED the look & reviews sold me on performance. My main regular bike is a Cannondale Quick Carbon 2. I didn't expect the Eclipse to...well eclipse it. But it has. In fact, the Eclipse is the only bike I ride. I loved it so much, I bought a 2nd as my main ride to store at our vacation place in Maui. It folds quickly and fits into a big wicker basket in the front hall. It accommodates short jaunts, massive climbs and descents on Haleakula, and eats miles for breakfast - I've done the West Maui loop several times - and the lower center of gravity even makes ferocious trade headwinds less of a burden.

It's the only bike I've ever ridden that garners compliments from other riders, often trying to figure out just what exactly it is, given that it doesn't look like a folding bike. And on performance, a few times I've been "accused" of riding an e-bike because it's so quick uphill and efficient everywhere else.

Just what I needed

My workday is an early start and I needed a folding bike so I could take it on public transit to work and then ride home. I wanted something that would feel like my racing bike; couldn't see myself riding 32 miles on something with little wheels. I was so glad to buy the Eclipse X22. Now it may not fold the smallest, and it's not super light, but it gives me a great workout. It shipped very quickly and arrived in a few days. I had to tighten and adjust things a bit but it was easy to get the bike ready to go. I also invested in the Tern Carry On cover. Although bicycles aren't allowed in my office building you can't really see what it is with the cover on; I haven't had any problems. I'm so glad to be able to enjoy cycling again. The Eclipse is the perfect combination of utility and performance that I needed.

Exactly what I was looking for. This bike ASKS to be ridden!

I was looking for a great road bike, that would be inspiring to ride lots of miles on, and that I could easily fold and take with me in my airplane. I FOUND IT! I spent months looking at every other folding bike brand, and traveled around to try and ride as many folding bikes that I could. I tried and rode several bikes, including high end Bromptoms, several Dahon models, The Fuji Origami, and a handful of others. I really was interested in this bike from Tern, but unfortunately could not find a single dealer who had one of these to try. So I decided just to buy one, to try out, and intended on returning it if it was not amazing. I am keeping the bike! It arrived and was easy to flip open, and looks super. The tires were not fully inflated, the gears were not tuned, and the brakes were not even, which was not surprising, and this appeared to be a brand new bike right from the factory. But it did not arrive "ready to ride" and was advertised to me when I bought it. I took it to the local bike shop, and they were all amazed by this bike. The high end components, and build, and classy look. The manager was amazed at this bike. He commented that the sum of the components were probably worth more than the price of the bike as a whole, and it appeared to be worth more than what I paid for it. So after spending $79 for a tune-up,, adjustment of the shifters, brakes and adjusting the handlebars and fit for me, it is a dream to ride now. Looking forward to traveling with this bike!

Not just an AMAZING folding bike, it's an AMAZING bike

I got my Eclipse X22 in September and I love it. I keep trying to find more excuses to get on it. The bike rides so smooth, the frame is so perfectly rigid, the shifting is so silky yet precise, and the brakes are so easy to operate yet responsive, it is hard to find the words. Everything about the bike says "attention was paid to all details."

I replaced the pedals with the SPD compatible version of the same ones. Works great.
