Overall, I like the bike, and want to point out:
1) have it assembled by a proper bike shop
2) get it with a chain guide
3) Tern honored their warranty generously
I ordered the bike to the closest store, which was a mistake. They assembled the bike incorrectly and the chain wouldn't stay on. The chain fell off daily. They said they'd fix it, but only limited off the first 2 gears. After leaving the store, the pedal fell off. I slowly pushed the bike back to the store where they attached it again.
I asked the Tern distributor, and they said they'd cover me taking it to another, proper bike shop to finish assembling the bike correctly under the warranty. The bike store fixed the gear to use alternating teeth to be able to hold the chain better, at the expense of removing the ring guard. This was well enough in that the chain stays a safe distance from my pants.
When I got the bike back, apparently the shop had over inflated the tire, and it exploded after several hours of sitting my itself with a loud pop. They also covered replacing the tire under warranty.
After getting the bike back again, now the chain falls off when shifting and going downhill about once per week. Without the ring guard, it falls off on the front pedal side, instead of along the axle. It still needs a chain guide.
Now the good:
The bike folds quickly and easily and fits it tight spaces, exactly as advertised. It is light and easy to carry. My U-lock fits nicely on it. The rack had no problem carrying my groceries. The kickstand is adjustable.
The bike doesn't seem to have the best balance when resting on the kickstand. It keeps trying to fall over, so I have to watch it whenever I set it down. I've found that turning the front to point upward for whatever surface it's on seems to help, when I can't rest it against something.
Stable construction and assembly.
It feels like a big bike.
intelligent solution when traveling by car.
I am from Bulgaria, Europe ;)
The node D8 is great for commuting. The gearing is perfect, ranging from gears that help uphill, to gears that are good for downhill. I love the fact the bike comes with the 24" wheels. Much better than the smaller wheels. It's a very solidly built bike. Brakes are good. Comes with nice extras including fenders, a bell, kickstand, and rear rack... everything you could ever want, all in one package.
I'm happy with this purchase.
I bought the Node D8 to use while boating. I consider myself a biker and have done competitive triathlons since 1980 so I have a lot of miles on the road. I like the 24” tires on the Node D8 and yesterday was riding fast down a hill. I felt stable, safe and had no wobble in the steering. For a compact bike this has a very solid ride. I would recommend this bike highly. I replace an older Dahon and am glad I did.
This is my second folding bike. The first one, a 20 inch, lasted me a year. This bike is was about twice the price, but the quality of the build, the components and the feel are worth it. I have non-folding bike that I think I will get rid of because this one is so fun to ride and in no way feels like a compromise. I'm very happy with it.
