I've had this bike for a few days, and it rides really well. It accelerates so well in stop-and-go traffic that my Android phone thought that I was driving a car. My main reason for getting a folder as my secondary commuter bike was to have some transit mode flexibility when we get thunderstorm forecasts and also to be able to take it on the train to visit family, and I think it will do well at that. I was looking for a bike with an internal hub and which came with lights and fenders. However, when I was riding it home from my local bike shop, it was such a joy to ride that it may actually be my go-to bike for many types of errands as long as I anticipate being able to lock it up outside safely. My local bike shop offered really great service the entire time I was deciding on a second bike, and they did a great job briefing me on the features when I went to pick it up.
The only big downside is that this model doesn't seem to be able to be rolled when it's folded, unlike what I saw in an older video on the Tern YouTube that indicated that all of Tern's folding models could be rolled, so it will likely have to be locked outside when I run errands a bit more than I expected. (Maybe Tern will make a new version of the rolling rack at some point, though!) The magnet to keep the wheels together also isn't as strong as it could be, but I expected that because it seems to be a common point of discussion online, so I'm planning to use a silicone strap to hold everything closed if need be.
Finally ... I was pleasantly surprised by the color that is sold in the USA. At least in terms of 2025 colorways, I thought that the shale color would be gray as in the photo, but it's actually a darkly iridescent color similar to Benjamin Moore's Dark Teal or a dark cyan paint. My big worry about shale gray was that it wouldn't be very visible against faded asphalt and the monochrome array of parked cars, but the dark teal color is decently contrasting and very pretty.
This bike is very well thought out. Internally geared hub so you don't have to worry about a rear detailer getting bent, front dynamo hub to power the integrated lights, and ready to fold. My wife and I both have tern bikes and folded they both for in the trunk of a civic. Great product
I needed a bike that I can learn how to ride with and store it away easily. This bike is perfect! And very well made, love the quality. I have a peace of mind knowing maintenance will be a breeze and is long lasting! Keep up the awesome work Tern Team!!
