I love this bike! I was considering this bike, or Bike Friday's Haul-a-Day, which was $1000 more. They are the same base weight, but the Short Haul is a little more compact. I am biking a 5-year-old around and adding all our stuff and sometimes groceries. I love that it's manual vs electric. I can actually carry the bike (just barely) down and up a half-flight of stairs to the basement. One thing I'd love to see redesigned is the pannier. It would be awesome to have a handle of some kind for carrying, and I don't love the attachment method onto the bike rack / clubhouse seat. It's difficult to thread the velcro loops in and a bit tedious. Slows me down. Also, the first time I used it, I didn't understand how to attach it correctly and the pannier fell off the bike while full and skidded in the road. Got all ripped up on the first day. A bit sad, but ultimately user error + not the most intuitive set-up.
Pannier aside, I give the bike an A++.
My son and I love commuting to his school, grabbing groceries, and running other errands on our Short Haul. It's a smooth, solid ride.
One bike w/ Stripped threads on cam shaft, not what I expected from Tern as a long term buyer and vocal supporter of the brand. Crappy plastic guard on 2nd bike caught on pedal and jammed. Bought 3 bikes for $3,000 and one is working fine.
The Short Haul has quickly become part of our Family as the go-to arrand bike. My wife uses it as her commute bike three days a week. Even with the addition of clubhouse mini and seat, it is light enough for her to lift onto and off the train. She swings by the preschool on her way home and picks up our 3-year-old daughter, who loves to climb aboard for a ride. The seat easily adjusts which allows me to cruise to the barber shop or the grocery store. The bike is spec'd with quality components, has amazing brakes, and is fun to ride. Easy 5 stars
