I've been enjoying my NBD S5i bike for over 2 years. But I needed a basket to drop in a book, coffee mug, thermos, jacket when I visit nearby parks or enough space for when I need a small grocery run.
The front basket option looked appealing, but I thought it would block my view too much (avoiding pot holes, cracks in the pavement...)
The basket is the perfect size. The rack on my bike is shorter than other Tern bikes so with the positioning of the basket, sometimes my heel will hit the basket getting off and on or walking the bike. I will need to be more careful.
Now I place the basket on the right side which seems to have eliminated some of the problem, since I get on and off on the left hand side.
The supplied allen wrench allowed me to adjust the placement of the two hooks that attach to the lower bike rack rail. The socket heads should really be beefier. They are too small and I think will strip quickly if one is not careful.
Now I walk into a grocery store, fill the basket, re-attach and go home. No more taking the grocerie bag and hanging it on my bike handles.
Saving on gas too!
Overall a good product!
I got a pair of these for my Verge S8i. I was apprehensive about getting rigid baskets, have used soft, foldable panniers in the past, especially on my touring bikes. But with the Ortlieb 1-handed connector I realized I'd be able to remove them in an instant when not in use.
That for me is mainly grocery errands, for which simple open, handled rigid baskets like these are perfect. Otherwise they remain at home until needed, my Verge looking as it's always been.
And storing them isn't much of an issue, since off the bike they nest, the pair taking little more space than 1. Plus the Dry Goods Bag I already have also fits inside them, so really they all take up little more additional storage room that before.
I also like that the Ortlieb connectors can be positioned fore & aft on the basket, allowing me to adjust them far enough rearward to clear my heels while pedaling. I've had some touring panniers that weren't adjustable and crowded me. Nothing's more annoying than something interfering with your pedaling. These don't, at least on my Verge's factory-equipped rack (that I believe is the separately available Cargo Rack). That also has rail studs that anchor the Ortlieb connectors to prevent sliding, another nice touch.
Overall an excellent solution for my grocery and other errand needs. And they look pretty good, too.
I needed a shopping basket pannier with a 16mm hook (like the Ortlieb system). Voila! I bought one as a trial. I will be ordering another. It Carrie's three 2 liter pop bottles plus other groceries. Hook up and take off is accomplished easily with one hand.
